TL;DR: For senior remote AI and machine learning engineer jobs, start with the monthly Hacker News "Who is hiring?" thread and Y Combinator's Work at a Startup, use Wellfound and Himalayas to see where each employer can hire, and add a free AI-only list such as newline's AI Jobs. On 8 October 2026 our index held 561 live remote postings labeled AI/ML Engineer from employers' own careers pages; 36.4% did not say where they hire, and 58.6% were senior level or above.
What is different about this search
Three things decide whether an application is worth your time. Many postings do not say where they can hire, more often for AI/ML engineers than for almost any other profession in our index. AI-training gigs look like jobs: "AI tutor" or "AI trainer" postings are usually piecework, not engineering. And the contract type (contractor, employee through an employer of record, or local employee) changes your pay and protection.
The most common titles under this label in our index were machine learning engineer, senior machine learning engineer, AI engineer, LLM application engineer and machine learning platform engineer. Search all of them. Our guide to remote AI and ML engineer jobs explains how they differ.

Hacker News "Who is hiring?"
Hacker News posted its October 2026 "Who is hiring?" thread at the start of the month. Only people who work at the hiring company may post, and a restricted role should say so, for example "REMOTE (US)". AI posts we read used lines such as "REMOTE (AMER or EMEA time zones)", so search the page for "ML", "LLM" and "AI".
Y Combinator's Work at a Startup
Y Combinator's startup jobs page included applied AI and AI engineer roles when we checked in October 2026. Most listings showed a salary, some in pounds or rupees, and locations such as "Remote (US)". The page says creating a profile is free.
Wellfound
Wellfound showed 285 machine learning engineer results when we checked in October 2026, many with a salary range and equity. Read the location line: we saw "Remote only" roles limited to the United States, to India and to Canada.
Himalayas
Himalayas is free for job seekers. Each machine learning listing carries a hiring label such as "United States only", "India only" or "Singapore only", plus "Full Time" or "Contractor", and some show pay.
newline AI Jobs
newline's AI Jobs is a free list of AI and machine learning roles: 3,697 jobs, updated on 1 October, when we checked in October 2026, with level and salary filters and links to company application pages. Some entries say "Unknown Company" and some filtered results were not remote, so check the employer and the location.
Remotive
Remotive has an Artificial Intelligence category that counted 4,013 openings when we checked in October 2026, with location, career level and salary filters. The free view said we were seeing 0.4% of available roles; a paid membership shows the rest. The category mixes senior engineering roles with AI-training listings.
LinkedIn is the volume source. Type "remote" into the search words with each title above, and check the location line: many AI roles are remote only within one country.
Also checked. Remote OK showed 41 machine learning results, with region and country filters.
What our index shows for AI and ML engineers
These figures come from our index of live remote postings that employers published themselves on their own careers pages or hiring systems: 43,429 on 8 October 2026, copies on job boards and office or hybrid jobs not counted (see how we check every job). The set here is the 561 postings our index files under the AI/ML Engineer label (labels are assigned by a model and are loose). "All professions" is the 25,804 postings our index has sorted by profession.
| Measure, 8 October 2026 | AI/ML Engineer | All professions |
| Live postings | 561 | 25,804 |
| State pay (any figure) | 43.3% | 42.6% |
| Median yearly band (postings with a yearly salary) | $165,000 to $220,000 | $131,098 to $175,450 |
| Read as open worldwide by our index | 3.6% | 5.1% |
| Say in their own words that they hire anywhere | 6 | 114 |
| List only the United States | 23.5% | 30.8% |
| List only European countries | 12.8% | 14.8% |
| Do not say where they hire | 36.4% | 24.6% |
Silence is the main problem. On 8 October 2026, 36.4% of AI/ML Engineer postings did not say where they hire, the third-highest share of the 41 professions with 200 or more postings. A posting that says nothing is not open worldwide: ask before you apply.
Fewer postings list only the United States. 23.5% listed only the United States, against 30.8% across all professions. Only 6 of the 561 said in their own words that they hire anywhere. The median yearly band rests on 222 postings with a yearly salary; see our machine learning engineer salary page.
Counting job boards as well, our index held 1,141 live AI/ML Engineer postings on 8 October 2026, and 580 of them (50.8%) were seen only through job boards, against 56.8% across all labelled postings.
Level
On 8 October 2026, 58.6% of AI/ML Engineer postings were senior level or above, 21.9% were mid-level and 37 (6.6%) were junior or internship; 72 (12.8%) stated no level. Employers that had postings under this label on 8 October 2026 included Reddit, Samsara, Deepgram, Instacart and Coinbase.
Where these jobs can hire you
"List includes" counts postings whose hiring list contains the country, directly or through a region such as "EMEA" or "Latin America". "Names it itself" counts lists that name the country.
| Country or region, 8 October 2026 | AI/ML Engineer: list includes | Names it itself | All professions: list includes |
| India | 22 (3.9%) | 21 | 3.0% |
| Philippines | 3 (0.5%) | 2 | 2.5% |
| Nigeria | 18 (3.2%) | 0 | 2.3% |
| Brazil | 23 (4.1%) | 6 | 4.5% |
| Poland | 40 (7.1%) | 12 | 7.2% |
| Any Central or Eastern European country | 57 (10.2%) | 30 (5.3%) | 9.2% |
| Any Latin American country | 52 (9.3%) | 28 (5.0%) | 8.5% |
| Any country outside the US/Canada | 172 (30.7%) | 135 (24.1%) | 34.4% |
India is named, Nigeria is included. 21 of the 22 lists that include India name it directly. None of the 18 that include Nigeria name it: they reach it through regions such as "EMEA" or "Africa", so read what the region covers. See live remote jobs open to India.
The Philippines is rare for this role. Only 3 of the 561 lists (0.5%) included it, against 2.5% across all professions.
AI-training gigs and contract work
Many postings that mention AI are not engineering jobs. They pay per task or per hour to write, rate or check answers that train a model. When we grouped AI and ML postings by title, we left out associate, tutor, trainer, annotation, subject-matter-expert and writer titles: that removed 60 postings, most of them one "Generative AI Associate" gig posted 52 times. Such work can be legitimate, but it is not a career step for an ML engineer.
Our Research Scientist label shows the mix. It held 214 postings on 8 October 2026, but the label is mixed: AI research roles sit beside physicians, behaviour analysts, academic lecturers and AI-training gigs. Of the 156 that stated an employment type, 47 said part-time and 46 contractor. Under the AI/ML Engineer label, 23 of the 363 postings that stated a type said contractor (6.3%), against 9.0% across all professions.
Before you apply, check that the duties name model training, serving or production systems, and whether you would be a contractor or an employee (our contractor and employee guide explains the difference). A real employer never asks you to pay to apply, for training or for equipment.

Where RemoteHunt fits
RemoteHunt is not a board you post on. It reads live remote postings from employers' own careers pages and job boards, checks where each one says it can hire, and scores the ones that can hire you from 0 to 100 against your resume, with a written reason. If you have no resume, it builds one with you. It is free to start and you never pay to apply.
FAQ
What is the best job board for remote AI and machine learning jobs?
No single board covers the field. The Hacker News "Who is hiring?" thread and Y Combinator's Work at a Startup suit AI startups, Wellfound and Himalayas show where each employer can hire, and LinkedIn has the most volume. On 8 October 2026 our index held 561 live remote postings labeled AI/ML Engineer from employers' own careers pages.
Can I get a remote ML engineer job from outside the United States?
Yes, but read the hiring list first. On 8 October 2026, 23.5% of the 561 remote AI/ML Engineer postings in our index listed only the United States, 30.7% listed at least one country outside the US and Canada, and 36.4% did not say where they hire.
Are AI tutor and AI trainer postings real ML jobs?
Usually not. They are paid tasks that train a model, often part-time or contract. On 8 October 2026, of the 156 postings under our Research Scientist label that stated an employment type, 47 said part-time and 46 contractor, because the label mixes research roles with AI-training gigs.
Are remote AI and ML jobs mostly senior?
Yes. On 8 October 2026, 58.6% of the 561 remote AI/ML Engineer postings in our index were senior level or above and 37 (6.6%) were junior or internship level.
How can RemoteHunt help me find remote AI and ML engineer jobs?
RemoteHunt checks where each live remote posting says it can hire and scores the ones open to you against your resume from 0 to 100, with a written reason for each score. For AI and ML engineers, that shows which postings can hire in your country before you apply.
