What “remote” means in a job posting

Remote jobs often hire only in some countries. This glossary explains the location words employers use. For each one, it says who the word usually includes.

Job counts were taken on 22 October 2026.

The short answer

“Remote” means you can do the work from home. It does not mean the employer can hire someone in your country. The place written after “Remote”, such as “US” or “EMEA”, names the countries it can hire in. When no place is written, check the job's text before you apply.

On 22 October 2026, our remote job market stats page counted about 53,100 live remote jobs. About 44% of them didn't say where the employer can hire. About 23% could hire only in the United States.

Words that may mean any country

Remote

About 7,700 live jobs

Also written as: “Fully remote”, “100% remote”, “Home based”, “Work from home”

Usually means

You work from home. On its own, the word does not say where the employer can hire. When the job text names no place either, it usually means anyone from any country.

Common trap

Many such jobs name a country lower in the text. A line such as “must be based in the US” is the real limit.

How to check

Check the text for a country before you apply. Search for “based in”, “reside” and “authorized to work in”. A 401(k) or a US health plan points to a US-only job.

Worldwide, Anywhere, Global

About 570 live jobs

Also written as: “Remote - Global”, “Home based - Worldwide”, “Work from anywhere”

Usually means

The employer can hire in most countries. It often pays you as a contractor, or through a company that runs payroll abroad.

People ask
  • Does worldwide mean every country? Usually not. Most employers can't hire in countries under trade sanctions.
Common trap

“Anywhere” sometimes means anywhere in one country, as in “Anywhere in the United States”.

How to check

Read the full sentence around the word. Look for a list of countries the company can't hire in.

Words that name one country

Remote - US

About 15,900 live jobs

Also written as: “Remote (USA)”, “US Remote”, “US-based”, “Remote, United States”, “Anywhere in the US”

Usually means

You must live in the United States and have the right to work there.

People ask
  • Does “Remote - Texas” mean only Texas? Sometimes. A job that names states may hire in those states only. Check the posting text.
  • Can I apply from abroad as a contractor? Usually not. Employers who write “US” rarely hire from other countries.
Common trap

Many US-only jobs never write “US” in the location line. They write “Remote” and ask for US work authorization in the text.

How to check

Look for “authorized to work in the US”, “US citizens”, a 401(k) or a list of US states.

Full guide: What does “Remote (US only)” mean?

Remote plus one country

Also written as: “Remote - India”, “Remote, Philippines”, “Brazil (Remote)”, “Remote within Kenya”

Usually means

You can work from home anywhere in that country. You can't work from another country.

People ask
  • Does “Pune, India (Remote)” mean only Pune? Usually not. It usually means anywhere in India. Check the posting text.
Common trap

Some employers want you near one city for office days, even when the job says remote.

How to check

Look for “within” or “based in” next to the country name. Then check whether office days are expected.

Jobs for 20 countries are in the list at the end of this page.

Region words

Region words have no official list. Each employer uses them its own way. When the text lists countries, that list is the limit.

North America

About 170 live jobs

Also written as: “NA”, “NAMER”, “Remote - North America”, “US or Canada”

Usually means

Usually the United States and Canada.

People ask
  • Is Mexico in North America? On a map, yes. In job posts, often not. Check the posting text.
  • Does “NA” always mean North America? No. In a list of African countries, “NA” means Namibia.
Common trap

A job may write “North America” and accept only US residents in its text.

How to check

Look for “Canada” or “Mexico” in the text. If neither appears, expect the United States only.

Remote jobs that can hire in Mexico.

  • Does it include the Caribbean? Sometimes. Check the posting text.

Common trap

Formally, EMEA includes Africa and the Middle East. Many EMEA jobs still hire only in Europe. Others hire only where the company has an office.

How to check

Look for a country list, “EU work permit” or “CET hours”. A list without your country means the job can't hire you.

Remote jobs that can hire in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Egypt, Turkey, Ukraine.

Europe, EU, EEA

About 490 live jobs

Also written as: “Remote - Europe”, “EU only”, “EU-based”, “European time zones”

  • Is Switzerland in the EU? No. It is in Europe and outside the EU.
  • Are Ukraine and Turkey in Europe? In most job posts, yes. Check the posting text.
Common trap

Many postings write “EU” and mean Europe. Others mean you need the right to work in the EU.

  • Is Egypt in the Middle East? Often yes, and it is in MENA too. Check the posting text.

Usually means

The hours you must be online with the team.

People ask
  • Does “Remote (EST)” mean I must live in the US? Not always. It sets your hours. Many such jobs also require US residence.
Common trap

“EST” often comes with a US-only rule written elsewhere in the text. A person in Colombia can work EST hours and still not be hired.

How to check

Ask whether the hours or the country is the limit. Look for “must reside in” or “authorized to work”.

Remote-first

About 5,000 live jobs

Also written as: “Remote-friendly”, “Distributed team”, “Fully distributed”

Usually means

The company runs as a remote team. The word says nothing about where it can hire.

How to check

Skip the culture words. Find the sentence about where you must live or work from.

Hybrid

Also written as: “Remote or hybrid”, “Hybrid remote”, “Remote if local”, “Flexible”

Usually means

Some days each week in an office and the rest at home. You must live near the office.

People ask
  • Is hybrid a kind of remote job? No. You must reach the office on set days.
Common trap

A line such as “Remote or hybrid if local to Maryland” can mean remote only for people near one office.

How to check

Look for office days per week and a city name.

How to check any job in two minutes

  1. Read the location line and any brackets after “Remote”.
  2. Search the text for “based in”, “reside”, “eligible to work” and “authorized to work”.
  3. Look at the pay currency and the benefits. A 401(k) points to the United States.
  4. Look for a list of countries the company can or can't hire in.
  5. If nothing is said, ask the recruiter whether they can hire someone in your country.
