Guide
On 4 November 2026 our index held 3,089 live remote postings open to a candidate in Kenya, out of 63,786 live remote postings overall. Only 55 of those 3,089 name Kenya (1.8%). The other 3,034 reach you through a region word (EMEA, Africa), or a line saying the company hires worldwide. Search those words, not the country name, and check the contract type and currency before you apply.
Every figure below comes from our index of live postings pulled almost entirely from employers' own careers pages (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and others) refreshed every two hours, measured on 4 November 2026.
| Measured on 4 November 2026 | Result |
|---|---|
| Live remote postings in the index | 63,786 |
| Postings that say nothing about where they hire | 23,373 (36.6%) |
| Postings open to a candidate in Kenya | 3,089 |
| ...of those, postings that name Kenya | 55 (1.8%) |
| Postings open through EMEA/Africa or a similar region label | 892 (28.9%) |
| Postings open because the employer says "worldwide" | 2,142 (69.3%) |
Read the last two rows: most of the market open to you in Kenya is not a Kenya posting or even an Africa posting. It is a company that says it hires anywhere and never mentions your country at all. Typing "Kenya" into a job board search box finds you 55 postings. The real number is 56 times larger.
A posting names a country when the employer already knows, legally, that it can pay someone there and wants to say so. Most employers describing a distributed team skip that step and write the shape of their hiring instead:
Then there is more than a third of the whole index: 36.6% of live postings say nothing at all about where they can hire. Silence is not a rejection. It is a question worth one email before you write a cover letter for it.
| Search term | What it usually means | Worth searching? |
|---|---|---|
| EMEA | Europe, the Middle East and Africa | Yes. Check the posting's own country list |
| Africa, MEA | The region as a whole | Yes |
| Worldwide, Anywhere, Global, Remote (International) | No stated location limit | Yes: the largest bucket for Kenya |
| UTC+2, UTC+3, GMT+3, CET | A working-hours band that includes Nairobi | Yes |
| Kenya | The 31 postings that name it | Yes, but a thin slice |
| "US only", "Remote (United States)" | Closed unless you relocate | No |
Run the region and worldwide searches first, then the country name, and always read the eligibility line before you invest an hour in an application. Our page of remote jobs open to candidates in Kenya already applies this filter, pulling in every posting that names Kenya, hires through EMEA/Africa, or says worldwide, so the region-only roles stop being invisible.
Most people using RemoteHunt from Kenya are not only engineers. The most-searched roles on the platform are project manager, operations, administrative assistant, business analyst, support specialist, full-stack developer, customer service, backend developer, DevOps and customer success. A mix that is roughly half technical and half not. Our Kenya listings on 4 November 2026 included operations and business-development roles at Delivery Hero, engineering roles at Moniepoint and Wikimedia, internal-audit roles at M-Kopa, customer-support work at Assent, and even a listing from Oyster, one of the employer-of-record platforms that makes cross-border hiring possible. If your target role is not engineering, do not assume "remote job" means developer only. Search by role and by region together.
A company with no Kenyan entity can still legally pay you, usually one of two ways. As an independent contractor, you invoice directly, file your own tax with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and get no statutory leave or notice. As an employee through an employer of record, a firm with a Kenyan entity employs you on the company's behalf, runs payroll and withholds PAYE, while you work for the company day to day. Our guide to contractor vs. employee remote offers walks through what changes between the two. Ask which one is on the table in your first call. A direct local entity is rare unless the company already has several people in East Africa.
How the money arrives. When we checked in September 2026, Kenyan remote workers most commonly received USD or GBP through Payoneer or Wise, then moved the balance to a local bank account or directly to M-Pesa, which several of these providers now support as a payout rail. Compare the quoted exchange rate against what a bank would charge for the same transfer, and use a licensed, named channel, never someone's personal account "to save on fees."
Tax is yours to handle as a contractor. The KRA expects income earned while resident in Kenya to be declared regardless of the currency it arrived in or which country paid it. Talk to a Kenyan accountant before your first invoice, not after. This article is general information, not tax advice for your specific case.
A real employer never asks you to pay to apply, to buy your own "starter kit," or to pay a recruiter's fee before you are hired. If a "remote job" in Kenya asks for money at any stage (a processing fee, training materials, equipment you must purchase upfront and get "reimbursed" for later), it is a scam, and the more official-looking the request, the more suspicious you should be. Search the exact company name plus "scam" before sending money or personal banking details to anyone.
Kenya runs on East Africa Time, UTC+3, all year. There is no daylight-saving shift to track, which makes stating your availability simple.
| Their office | Their 9:00 a.m., in Nairobi time | What the overlap feels like |
|---|---|---|
| London (UTC+0 / +1) | 12:00 p.m. in winter, 11:00 a.m. in summer | Full overlap with a normal UK working day |
| Berlin, Paris (UTC+1 / +2) | 11:00 a.m. in winter, 10:00 a.m. in summer | Nearly the whole working day shared |
| New York (UTC-5 / -4) | 5:00 p.m. in winter, 4:00 p.m. in summer | Afternoon into evening for you |
A European-based role overlaps with an ordinary Nairobi working day; a US East Coast role is real work too, but it will run from your afternoon into your evening. Say so yourself in the interview rather than finding out after you accept. Our explainer on time-zone overlap covers how much shared time most teams expect.
RemoteHunt reads 70,000+ live remote postings from employers' own careers pages and job boards and checks, for each one, where it says it can hire, so a job that only ever says "EMEA" or "worldwide" still reaches you. It then scores every posting that's open to Kenya against your resume, 0–100, with a written reason. Free needs no card and shows the company and apply link on some matches. The 90-day pass shows them on every match: $29 once, no renewal, half back within 7 days.
On 4 November 2026, our index held 3,089 live remote postings from employers' own careers pages that could hire someone in Kenya, out of 63,786 total. Only 55 of them name Kenya directly; the rest are open through a region label such as EMEA or Africa, or because the employer says it hires worldwide.
Search EMEA, Africa, worldwide, anywhere, global, and time-zone bands such as UTC+2, UTC+3 or GMT+3. Then read the eligibility line on anything promising, and email the recruiter directly when a posting says nothing about hiring locations.
Yes, as an independent contractor invoicing directly, or as an employee through an employer of record with a Kenyan legal entity. The two differ in tax treatment, benefits and notice period, so ask which one is being offered before you discuss pay.
Not usually. Kenya is UTC+3 year-round, so European-based roles overlap with a normal working day for most of the year. US East Coast roles run into your evening rather than your night, and US West Coast roles are the ones that genuinely push into late hours. Check the stated overlap before you accept.
RemoteHunt finds remote jobs that can hire you and scores each one 0 to 100 against your resume. It reads 70,000+ live postings from company careers pages and job boards, so a role that never types the word "Kenya" still shows up scored against your resume with the reasoning attached.
