On 8 October 2026 our index held 636 live remote postings under the Data Engineer and Data Scientist labels on employers' own careers pages, and 72.6% of them were senior level or above; Data Engineer hiring lists included a Latin American country on 15.5% of postings, against 8.5% across all professions.
What an experienced data candidate should know first
Most remote data engineering and data science postings ask for years of pipelines, warehouses or models in production. Three things decide whether an application is worth your time:
- Where the job can hire. Many analytics roles are open only in the United States. Read the location line before the stack.
- Time zone overlap. Pipelines break at night and someone has to fix them. Ask which hours you must overlap with the team and whether there is an on-call rota, and in which time zone. Our guide to time zone overlap lists the questions.

Board by board
DataJobs
DataJobs lists data science, analytics, data engineering and data technology jobs only. When we checked in October 2026, its front page showed senior titles such as "Senior Data Engineer", "Lead Data Science Engineer" and "Director, Data Solutions Engineering", a few marked remote. We saw no remote filter.
dbt Community Slack
The dbt Community is a large group of analytics and data engineers. Its community rules say recruiters may post in the #jobs and #jobs-eu channels but may not ask for applications in direct messages. dbt Labs says it does not review job posts.
Locally Optimistic Slack
Locally Optimistic is a community for analytics and data people. You join by emailing its admins for an invite. Its rules send recruiters to a #job-postings channel.
Himalayas
Himalayas has data engineer and data scientist pages and matches you with jobs for free. When we checked in October 2026, data engineer listings carried labels such as "Argentina only", "Mexico only", "Poland only", "India only" and "United States only", and many titles said Senior, Lead, Staff or Principal.
Arc
Arc lists remote freelance and full-time roles and says it is free for candidates, including when you land a job. It screens applicants for English and, for freelance work, domain skills. Its data engineer listings showed regions such as "Remote - India" or Latin America, a Freelance or Full-time label, and sometimes an overlap rule such as "Min. 5 hr working overlap with Pacific Time".
Wellfound
Wellfound is a startup marketplace. Its data engineer page showed 1,856 results when we checked in October 2026, many with a salary range and an equity figure, and "Remote only" lines that name a country, such as Germany, or say "Everywhere".
Built In
Built In covers mostly US tech companies. Its remote data engineering page labels each job with pay, a level such as "Senior level" or "Mid level", and a work arrangement. Some say "Remote or Hybrid", so check that the job is fully remote and where it hires.
Hacker News "Who is hiring?"
Hacker News posts a "Who is hiring?" thread each month. The October 2026 thread's rules say to post only if you are part of the hiring company and to write "REMOTE (US)" or similar when the country is limited. We saw posts for a Lead Data Engineer and a Staff Data Scientist. Search the page for "data".
LinkedIn is the volume source. Search exact titles such as "senior data engineer" with "remote", and read each location line.
Also checked. Remotive's data and analytics category showed 5,890 openings, but its free view shows only a small part. The Remote Data Science Jobs newsletter covers data science and ML roles by email. We Work Remotely has no data category, and its back-end category showed no data roles when we checked.
What our index shows for data engineers and data scientists
These figures come from our index of live remote postings that employers published themselves on their own careers pages or hiring systems: 43,429 on 8 October 2026, copies on job boards and office or hybrid jobs not counted (see how we check every job). The group is the 636 postings our index files under the Data Engineer label (425, which also holds analytics engineer, data architect and data modeler titles) and the Data Scientist label (211). Labels are set by a model and are loose. "All professions" is the 25,804 postings our index has sorted by profession.

Data scientist jobs are rarely open worldwide. Our index read 1.9% of data scientist postings as open worldwide, 39th of the 41 professions with 200 or more postings, and none said in their own words that it hires anywhere. Only 1 data engineer posting did.
Data scientists see pay more often. 55.5% of data scientist postings stated pay on 8 October 2026, 4th of the 41 professions with 200 or more postings, against 42.6% across all professions.
Many data engineer jobs reach you only through boards. Counting job boards as well, our index held 1,079 live remote data engineer postings on 8 October 2026: 425 (39.4%) on employers' own careers pages and 654 (60.6%) seen only through job boards, against 56.8% across all labelled postings.

Latin America and Brazil are strong for data engineers. Data Engineer lists included a Latin American country on 15.5% of postings and Brazil on 9.9%, against 8.5% and 4.5% across all professions.
Nigeria is reached through regions, not by name. No data engineer or data scientist posting named Nigeria on 8 October 2026; the 5 and 1 that include it do so through regions such as "EMEA" or "Africa". Data scientist lists included any country outside the US and Canada on 25.6% of postings, against 34.4% across all professions.
Level and contract type
These are senior markets. On 8 October 2026, 69.9% of data engineer postings and 78.2% of data scientist postings were senior level or above, against 58.0% across all professions; 20.7% and 15.2% were mid-level, and only 15 and 5 were junior or internship. The most common titles were "senior data engineer" (48 postings) and "senior data scientist" (29).
Most are employee jobs, as far as postings say. Of the 258 data engineer postings that stated an employment type, 232 said full-time and 23 contractor (8.9%, against 9.0% across all professions); of the 130 data scientist postings, 126 said full-time and 4 contractor. Most postings state no type, so these are floors. A real employer never asks you to pay to apply, for training or for equipment.
