TL;DR — A sales development representative (SDR) starts conversations with potential customers and books qualified meetings for the account executives who close the deals. It is the most common way into B2B software sales without prior sales experience, and it is measured in meetings booked, not revenue. Our index held 538 live remote SDR roles on 20 September 2026; 16.7% stated a salary range and 25.7% named the United States among the places they can hire.
Sales development is the job most people fall into rather than choose. It is also the single most reliable entry point into technology sales, because it is one of the few remote roles where a hiring manager will seriously consider someone with no experience in the function — provided you understand what you are signing up for. This guide covers the definition, the numbers, the quota, the pay structure and the honest trade-offs.
What a sales development representative is
An SDR is a salesperson at the top of the funnel. You identify potential customers, reach out by email, phone and social channels, work out whether the company has a problem your product solves, and hand the qualified ones to an account executive as a booked meeting. You do not negotiate contracts, run pricing conversations or close deals.
The role exists because of division of labour. Closing a six-figure software deal takes weeks of calls; so does finding the twenty companies worth having those calls with. Splitting the two lets each person get good at one of them.
SDR, BDR and AE: what the titles mean
The conventional split, which we confirmed against several sales-operations sources in September 2026, is this — though plenty of companies use SDR and BDR interchangeably, so read the job description rather than the title.
| Title | Where the lead comes from | What they are measured on |
| SDR — sales development representative | Inbound: demo requests, trials, content downloads | Qualified meetings booked |
| BDR — business development representative | Outbound: cold calls, cold email, prospect research | Qualified meetings booked |
| AE — account executive | The meetings SDRs and BDRs book | Revenue closed |
SDR and BDR sit at the same level and usually the same pay band; they are two on-ramps to the same destination. The account executive role is the destination, and both paths commonly reach it — our guide to remote account executive jobs covers what that step demands, and remote sales jobs maps the wider function.
The market on 20 September 2026
Our index counts live remote postings published on employers' own careers pages and applicant tracking systems, not aggregator reposts.
| Measure (20 September 2026) | Remote SDR roles | All remote roles |
| Live openings | 538 | 37,811 |
| State a salary range | 16.7% | 15.6% |
| Name the US among their hiring regions | 25.7% | 8,128 postings do |
| Employers posting them include | Remote, ElevenLabs, Airwallex | — |
Two things are worth reading off that table. Sales development is genuinely remote-friendly: at 538 live openings it sits in the same band as security engineering and data engineering, and the work — calls, email, a CRM — has no physical component. And it discloses pay slightly more often than the market average, which matters in a role where the variable component is half the conversation.
The US concentration is the constraint. Just over a quarter of remote SDR postings name the United States among the places they can hire, because a rep selling into US accounts usually has to work US hours. If you are outside North America, look for roles that name your region in the title — "SDR, EMEA", "SDR, APAC", "SDR, DACH" — which are sold into the market you sit in.
What a quota actually is
A quota is the number you are expected to deliver in a period. For an account executive it is revenue. For an SDR it is almost always meetings: qualified meetings booked, or meetings that the AE accepts, or opportunities created — measured monthly, sometimes quarterly.
The distinction matters more than it sounds. A meeting quota is largely within your control: it is a function of how many accounts you work and how good your first message is. A revenue quota is not, because deals die for reasons that have nothing to do with you. That is exactly why sales development is the safer first sales job.
Benchmark research widely cited in 2026 — principally The Bridge Group's recurring SDR metrics reports, which we checked in September 2026 — puts the median SDR at roughly 14 to 15 qualified meetings booked per month, with the strongest quartile in the low twenties. The same body of research puts ramp time at around three months to the first qualified meeting and closer to five months to full quota, and average tenure in the role at roughly 14 to 18 months before a promotion or a move. Numbers vary enormously by deal size and market, so treat them as a shape, not a target: ask in the interview what this team's quota is and what share of the team hit it last quarter.
How SDR pay is structured
SDR compensation is split between a base salary and a variable component tied to quota, and "OTE" — on-target earnings — is the sum of the two assuming you hit 100%. A posting quoting one number without saying which is quoting an incomplete offer. Our explainer on what OTE means covers how to read the split, whether the variable part is capped and what "accelerators" do above quota.
Four questions settle most SDR offers:
- What is the base, separately from the OTE?
- Is the variable component paid on meetings booked or on meetings the AE accepts? The second is harder and partly outside your control.
- Is there a clawback if a meeting no-shows or is disqualified later?
- What did the team's quota attainment look like last quarter? If nobody hit it, the quota is the problem, not the reps.
Only 16.7% of the remote SDR postings in our index stated a salary range at all, so most of this has to come from the conversation. Ask early; sales teams respect a candidate who negotiates, and they are usually the fastest of any function to answer.
Getting hired without sales experience
Sales development is one of the few remote roles where a hiring manager will take a serious look at someone who has never done the job. What they are looking for is evidence of four things, and they will accept it from any background:
- You can write a short, specific message. Cold email is a writing job. Two sentences that show you understand a company's business beat any amount of enthusiasm.
- You are not afraid of the phone. Support, hospitality, recruiting, teaching and fundraising all count.
- You can take a rejection rate of 90%+ without it changing your behaviour on the next call. This is the real filter, and interviewers probe it hard.
- You are organised. A hundred open conversations in a CRM is an administration job as much as a sales one.
A practical application tactic: SDR hiring managers read your outreach to them as a work sample. A generic application to a sales development role is a demonstration that you cannot do the job. Name the company's product, say something concrete about who you think they sell to, and keep it under 150 words. Our guides to the job boards that serve remote sales roles list where these openings are posted.
The honest trade-offs
Sales development is a hard, repetitive job with an unusually fast exit: it is the standard two-year apprenticeship for a career that pays well later, not a destination. The daily reality is high-volume outreach and a lot of silence. What you get in exchange is the fastest route from no sales experience to an account executive seat, a skill set that transfers to customer success, partnerships and marketing, and a role where a remote employer can measure you objectively — which, as remote hiring goes, is a genuine advantage.

FAQ
What does an SDR do all day?
An SDR researches target accounts, reaches out by email, phone and social channels, holds short qualifying conversations, and books meetings for account executives. The day is mostly outreach and CRM work, broken up by a handful of live conversations. SDRs do not negotiate pricing or close deals — that is the account executive's job.
What is the difference between an SDR and an account executive?
An SDR starts conversations and books qualified meetings; an account executive takes those meetings and runs the deal to a signed contract. SDRs are measured on meetings booked, account executives on revenue closed. Sales development is typically the junior role, and moving to account executive is the standard next step.
Can I get a remote SDR job with no sales experience?
Often, yes. Sales development is one of the most common entry points into B2B software sales, and hiring managers regularly take candidates from support, hospitality, recruiting, teaching and fundraising. What they test is clear short writing, comfort on the phone, resilience to rejection and organisation — not a sales title on your resume.
What is an SDR quota?
A quota is the number of qualified meetings or opportunities an SDR is expected to produce in a period, usually a month. Unlike a revenue quota, it is largely within the rep's control. Benchmark research cited through 2026 puts the median at roughly 14 to 15 meetings a month, with ramp to full quota taking around five months, but quotas vary widely by deal size and market.
Are remote SDR jobs open outside the United States?
Some, but the role is more US-concentrated than remote work overall: 25.7% of the 538 live remote SDR postings in our index on 20 September 2026 named the United States among their hiring regions, largely because reps selling into US accounts work US hours. Candidates elsewhere should look for postings that name their own market, such as "SDR, EMEA" or "SDR, APAC".
