Horace Mann is seeking an experienced and compassionate Counselor to support members through ESI’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) . In this role, you will help individuals navigate behavioral health, substance use, relationship and work-life concerns through timely assessment, brief counseling and connections to appropriate care and resources.
You will provide telephone, virtual and, when assigned, in-person support while managing cases from initial intake through follow-up. You will also collaborate with providers, colleagues and client organizations to support member needs and continuity of care.
The ideal candidate brings sound clinical judgment, strong communication skills and a member-focused approach to helping individuals address challenges and take meaningful steps forward.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Assessment & Counseling
- Conduct assessments and telephonic triage to identify member needs, evaluate concerns and determine appropriate support.
- Provide crisis support, coaching and brief solution-focused counseling through telephone, telehealth and, when assigned, in-person services.
- Make clinical determinations consistent with company risk policies and the best interests of the member.
- Apply knowledge of behavioral health conditions, levels of care and discharge-planning practices to guide care recommendations.
Case Management & Resource Coordination
- Manage cases from initial intake through completion, including timely follow-up and coordination of services.
- Connect members with appropriate network providers and financial, legal, personal assistance and work-life resources.
- Consult with service providers, coordinate referrals and complete session authorizations.
- Collaborate with colleagues and after-hours service providers to support case completion and continuity of care.
Client Consultation & Collaboration
- Consult with Human Resources professionals and supervisory personnel from client organizations regarding employee-related concerns.
- Partner with internal colleagues and external providers to address member needs while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality.
Documentation & Professional Standards
- Maintain timely, accurate and professional documentation within the case management system.
- Handle Protected Health Information (PHI) in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements and company policies.
- Maintain current knowledge of industry practices, professional ethical standards and applicable licensure requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling or another behavioral health-related field.
- At least five years of experience as an EAP counselor or in an equivalent behavioral health clinical role.
- Strong assessment, triage, crisis-support, research, referral and case management capabilities.
- Knowledge of behavioral health conditions, levels of care and discharge-planning practices.
- Understanding of HIPAA requirements and the appropriate handling of PHI.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office and other Windows-based programs and applications.
- Strong communication, clinical judgment, organization and documentation skills.
Preferred Credentials
- Licensed mental health clinician, Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP), certified Human Resources professional or another recognized industry credential in psychology, social work or counseling.
- An active, current and unrestricted professional license in the state of employment may be required for positions providing in-person counseling.
Salary Range:
$66,500.00 - $92,000.00 annually + bonus
Salary is commensurate to experience, location, etc.
