About Us

Our client is a California plaintiff-side litigation firm representing individuals and families in elder abuse, medical malpractice, nursing home negligence, wrongful death, and complex personal injury matters. The team handles medically and legally detailed cases where strong litigation support can make a meaningful difference in the outcome.

About the Role

As a Litigation Legal Assistant, you will support an active California litigation practice focused primarily on elder abuse and medical malpractice matters. This is a hands-on litigation position, not a general administrative role: you will work directly with discovery, subpoenas, medical records, court filings, depositions, calendaring, and case preparation.

You will be trusted to manage routine litigation assignments independently under attorney supervision while keeping cases organized and deadlines moving. The strongest candidates will already understand California civil litigation procedures and be comfortable working with medical evidence, expert witnesses, and detailed discovery.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare draft responses to Form Interrogatories, Special Interrogatories, Requests for Production, and Requests for Admission for attorney review.
  • Organize written discovery, medical records, facility records, supporting evidence, and document indexes so attorneys can quickly identify the information needed to advance each case.
  • Track discovery deadlines, outstanding responses, hearings, depositions, mediations, and other litigation milestones across multiple active matters.
  • Prepare subpoenas, deposition notices, proofs of service, and related litigation documents accurately and on schedule.
  • Support elder abuse, medical malpractice, nursing home negligence, wrongful death, and complex personal injury matters involving issues such as pressure injuries, falls, medication errors, dehydration, malnutrition, and neglect.
  • Build and maintain medical chronologies and organized case records that help attorneys and experts understand treatment history and key factual developments.
  • Coordinate medical record collection, expert reviews, depositions, and communications with clients, opposing counsel, healthcare providers, process servers, and expert witnesses.
  • Support California service of process, including personal service, substituted service, summonses, complaints, subpoenas, and preparation or tracking of proofs of service.
  • Assist with California electronic court filings and maintain accurate electronic litigation files, correspondence, exhibits, and supporting documents.
  • Help prepare cases for mediation and trial, including organizing exhibits, witness information, medical evidence, and other attorney-requested materials.

Requirements

Must-Have:

  • At least 2 years of hands-on California civil litigation experience.
  • Practical experience assisting with written discovery responses, including interrogatories, Requests for Production, and Requests for Admission, for attorney review.
  • Working knowledge of California litigation procedures, including court calendaring, electronic filing, subpoenas, depositions, and service of process.
  • Ability to distinguish expert witness testimony and opinions from lay witness testimony and to support related litigation preparation.
  • Strong written and verbal English with the accuracy required for legal documents, professional correspondence, and deadline-sensitive work.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and legal case management or document management systems.
  • Ability to provide a redacted legal writing sample personally drafted by you, preferably a discovery response, pleading, or other litigation-related document. All confidential and identifying client information must be removed.

Nice to Have:

  • Plaintiff-side experience involving elder abuse, medical malpractice, nursing home negligence, wrongful death, or complex personal injury litigation.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, healthcare and facility records, medical experts, and common clinical issues involved in elder abuse or malpractice cases.
  • Familiarity with California Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act litigation.
  • Legal education or formal legal studies.
  • Experience with Litify or a similar legal case management platform; bilingual English/Spanish communication skills are also a plus.
