BareBones WorkWear® has been family-owned and operated since 1998, when founder Stu Nelson built the business from the ground up in Sacramento. What started as a trunk full of coveralls has grown into a 10-location retail chain serving California’s hardest-working people, and a growing e-commerce operation that ships nationwide.

We’re not a startup, and we’re not a big-box chain. We know exactly who we are and where we’re going. Over the past several years we’ve partnered with outside consultants and development firms to build out our digital infrastructure: our website, inventory systems, POS integrations, and internal tooling. Those projects have moved us a long way forward. Now we’re at a point where we want one exceptional engineer in-house: someone who can own the technical roadmap, work across the full stack, and bring the kind of initiative that outside contractors never quite can.

Job Summary

Software Engineer

We’re open to either arrangement, and we mean that genuinely.

The work ahead of us is substantial, but it’s also modular. Some of it is project-based: rebuild the storefront, integrate the AI recommendation engine, wire up the data pipeline. Other parts are ongoing: maintain integrations, support the team, iterate on tooling. A full-time engineer digs into all of it from day one. A part-time engineer who’s the right fit, say, a senior developer with consulting commitments or someone intentionally working reduced hours, will take longer to get through the roadmap, and we’re at peace with that tradeoff if the quality and ownership are there.

What we won’t do is hire a full-time body just to fill a seat. If the best candidate available wants 10 hours a week, we’d rather have them than a mediocre full-timer. Compensation and scope will be structured accordingly.

Responsibilities

  • AI and LLM integration ; building practical AI features into our customer experience and internal workflows: product recommendations, conversational search, automated inventory insights, and customer service tooling powered by modern LLM APIs
  • Modern e-commerce front end ; rebuilding and evolving our customer-facing site on a React/Next.js stack; fast, clean, and built to scale
  • Cloud infrastructure and DevOps ; owning our cloud environment (AWS or Azure), CI/CD pipelines, and deployment reliability across systems
  • Data pipelines and analytics; pulling together sales, inventory, and customer data into dashboards and reporting that actually drive decisions; building the pipelines that make that possible
  • Systems integration ; connecting our POS, accounting (QuickBooks/Sage), supplier feeds, and online marketplace listings so data flows without people manually bridging the gaps
  • Internal tooling; whatever the ops, sales, and store teams need to do their jobs faster and with less friction

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • Genuine full-stack range, comfortable moving between backend logic, frontend UI, data work, and infrastructure without needing a handoff at every boundary
  • Strong fundamentals in at least one modern language (Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, or similar)
  • Hands-on experience with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) and building AI-powered features into production applications
  • Modern frontend experience: React, Next.js, or equivalent
  • Cloud platform experience (AWS, Azure, or GCP) including deployments, storage, and managed services
  • Solid SQL and relational database skills; experience with data pipelines or analytics tooling a plus
  • Comfort with Git, automated testing, and CI/CD workflows
  • The kind of communication skills that let you work directly with non-technical owners and store staff, explaining tradeoffs clearly and setting expectations honestly

Benefits

Competitive salary ($145,000 to $190,000 USD, based on experience and hours)

Health, dental, and vision insurance

Remote work

Direct access to ownership and real influence over technical decisions
