Remote Jobs in India: Where the Openings Actually Are (2026)

Only 543 of the 1,552 remote postings that can hire in India name the country. Where the rest are, and how to search for them from India.

TL;DR — Searching a job board for "India" finds a fraction of what is open to you. On 20 September 2026 our index held 1,552 live remote postings from employers' own careers pages that can hire someone in India, and only 543 of them name the country. The rest arrive through a regional label such as APAC or Asia, or through a worldwide one.

The most expensive habit in an Indian remote job search is typing the country into the search box. It looks like the obvious filter. It also throws away three postings out of every four you could have applied to.

How many remote jobs can hire in India?

We measured the whole index on 20 September 2026. Every posting comes from an employer's own careers page rather than from an aggregator, so the eligibility line is the company's own.

India is the best case, not the worst

We publish a page per country for ten countries. India has the highest share of postings that name it outright — and even there it is barely one in three.

Why the country name is such a weak filter

  • Employers write regions, not country lists. "APAC", "Asia" and "Worldwide" are what a recruiter types when the legal answer is "wherever we can employ or contract people".
  • Half the market says nothing at all. 49.2% of postings in our index do not state where they can hire. Silence is not a no, but it is not a yes either.
  • "Remote" often means remote inside one country. 18.7% of the index is United States only — see what "Remote (US only)" means.
  • Indian boards carry a different market. Naukri, Instahyre, Cutshort and Hirist were the names most often recommended for domestic remote work when we checked in September 2026. They are strong for India-based employment; a globally distributed employer hiring into APAC usually is not posting there.

What to search for instead

Treat the region label as the filter. Our India page does exactly that: postings from employers' own careers pages that can hire in India, however they said so.

How an overseas company can actually pay you

Three arrangements, and they are not interchangeable:

  1. Contractor. You invoice. Fast, common, and you carry your own taxes, with no statutory benefits or notice period.
  2. Employee through an employer of record. A local firm employs you on the company's behalf and runs payroll and contributions while you work for the company day to day — see what an employer of record is.
  3. Employee of a local entity. The company has an Indian entity and hires you into it directly.

Employing someone in India carries real compliance weight — provident fund and state insurance registration, tax withholding, gratuity, and the four labour codes that employment guides we checked in September 2026 date to 21 November 2025. That is why small foreign companies reach for contractors and mid-sized ones for an employer of record. Being called a contractor while managed like an employee is a misclassification risk worth understanding before you sign. This is general information, not legal or tax advice — check your own case with a professional.

"Global company hiring in India" often means an office

India has a very large base of captive offices. The Zinnov–NASSCOM India GCC Landscape Report 2026 counts 2,117 global capability centres employing 2.36 million people. Those are real jobs at international companies, but most are Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune or NCR jobs on a hybrid schedule.

The Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025 shows the same split from the worker's side: 25.6% of developers in India reported working fully remotely against 30.5% fully in person, while in the United States 45% reported fully remote. A search that mixes both markets hands you office roles with a remote-sounding title.

The time-zone question

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30, which is why the employer's base matters as much as the region label.

Employer's baseOverlap with a 9-to-6 IST day
Europe (UK, EU)Most of the afternoon
Middle EastNearly the whole day
US East CoastLate evening IST
US West CoastNight IST

A 9 a.m. start in New York is 6:30 p.m. in Delhi during US daylight saving and 7:30 p.m. outside it — workable for a standup, not for a full day. Read the hours line as carefully as the location line, and treat a phrase such as "four hours of overlap with Eastern time" as a description of your evenings for as long as you hold the job.

A search that works from India

  1. Filter by hiring region — APAC, Asia, Worldwide — not by the word "India". Remote-only boards print it: when we checked in September 2026, We Work Remotely ran an Asia page and labelled listings with the employer's region, such as "Anywhere in the World", and Remotive, Remote OK and Working Nomads carried a region or country tag too. Our roundup for candidates outside the US compares them.
  2. Add the channels where teams post directly. Wellfound lists startup roles with pay and location up front, and the "Ask HN: Who is hiring?" thread on Hacker News, still running in September 2026, carries entries marked REMOTE with the hiring region in plain English.
  3. Watch company careers pages. A role appears there first, and the eligibility line is the company's own rather than a board's rewrite.
  4. Read the location line before the title, and the hours line second. Decide in advance how much late-evening overlap you will accept.
  5. Ask before you invest. One short question settles a missing location line, and one more settles whether the role is contractor, EOR or local-entity employment.

RemoteHunt is an all-in-one AI job-search platform for remote workers — it builds your resume, finds and scores jobs against it, writes tailored applications, and coaches you through the search. It aggregates remote jobs from 20+ sources and company career pages, shows where each employer says it can hire, and scores every posting 0–100 against your resume with the reasoning attached, so a worldwide posting that fits you does not stay invisible because nobody wrote the word "India" in it.

FAQ

How many remote jobs can actually hire someone in India?

Our index held 1,552 live remote postings from employers' own careers pages that say they can hire in India on 20 September 2026. Only 543 of them name India; the other 1,009 are open to India through a regional label such as APAC or Asia, or through a worldwide one.

Why do so few remote jobs mention India by name?

Because employers describe eligibility by region. A company that can employ or contract people across Asia writes "APAC" or "Worldwide" once instead of listing countries. Across our whole index, 49.2% of postings do not state a hiring location at all, and only 2.0% say worldwide explicitly.

Can I work remotely for a US company from India?

Yes, usually in one of three ways: you invoice as a contractor, you are employed through an employer of record, or the company has an Indian entity. Note that 18.7% of remote postings in our index are United States only, so check the location line first — and expect a US-hours overlap requirement.

Are Naukri and LinkedIn enough for a remote job search in India?

They cover the Indian employment market well, including work-from-home roles at Indian employers. They are weaker for globally distributed companies, which post on their own careers pages and on remote-only boards that print a hiring region. Use both kinds of source.
