About the Role
Founding AI engineer seat. AI adoption at Portless today is basic (decks, spreadsheets, call summaries, a bit of vibe-coded dashboards) — no real end-to-end agentic workflows yet. You'll build the AI infrastructure: shipping high-impact agentic workflows yourself, and building reusable "Lego blocks" (APIs, MCP tools, docs) so any team can build their own. Cross-functional, high-leverage role touching every team, working directly with leadership.
Example first project: an agent for inbound invoice questions — understands the question, pulls the right invoice, drafts a context-aware reply for a teammate to click-send, turning an hour of work into ~30 seconds.
Stack: Python, TypeScript, LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI), MCP, RAG, vector databases, agent orchestration, Cursor/Claude Code.
Requirements
- Must be based in North America.
- 3+ years software engineering with 1-2+ years building production AI systems.
- 10+ real agentic/LLM workflows shipped end-to-end.
- Platform mindset (built tools/infra for others, not just yourself).
- Strong Python and/or TypeScript across backend and lightweight frontend.
- Relevant sector background (e-commerce, 3PL, logistics, or comparable B2B).
Nice to have
- RAG pipelines.
- Vector DBs.
- Multi-step tool-use/agent orchestration.
- Evals frameworks.
