Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented Senior QA Engineer to join our EMR integration team. This is a unique opportunity for an engineer with a strong foundation in healthcare software testing to help ensure the reliability, correctness, and compliance of complex health data exchange workflows. You will be embedded in a team building and maintaining integrations between Epic, Mirth, internal LIMS systems, and third-party platforms, and your work will directly protect the integrity of patient data moving through those pipelines. Beyond the EMR team itself, you will serve as a quality partner across the broader engineering organization, validating EMR compatibility for ecosystem-wide features and ensuring that changes anywhere in the stack don't silently break healthcare data flows. This role reports to EMR Engineering but will work in close partnership with EMR Product for UAT scope, prioritization, and onboarding to intricate/cross-functional system behaviors.
Primary Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain automated and manual test strategies for EMR integration workflows, FHIR APIs, and HL7 message processing
- Validate FHIR resource conformance, message structure, and healthcare terminology mappings across integration touchpoints
- Act as the EMR compatibility subject matter expert for cross-team feature releases, partnering with EMR product and other engineering teams to assess impact, define test requirements, and validate end-to-end behavior before changes reach production
- Think beyond the code: work with product to validate not just code success, but downstream behavioral success in our other systems
- Improve test asset discipline: move from one-off checks toward documented, repeatable cases and regression sets with traceability for compliance and release evidence.
- Develop and maintain an ecosystem-level EMR compatibility test suite that can be run against new features, platform changes, and dependency upgrades across the organization
- Partner closely with software engineers and product managers to define acceptance criteria, identify edge cases, and establish testing requirements early in the development lifecycle
- Own end-to-end testing of healthcare data exchange flows, including inbound/outbound HL7 message handling, API contract validation, and integration scenarios
- Build and maintain test environments, mock EMR endpoints, and synthetic patient datasets suitable for HIPAA-compliant testing
- Contribute to CI/CD pipeline quality gates, ensuring automated EMR compatibility checks are integrated into deployment workflows across teams
- Identify, document, and track defects with clear reproduction steps and clinical context; work with engineers across teams to prioritize and verify fixes
- Support compliance and audit readiness by maintaining thorough test documentation and traceability against regulatory requirements
Qualifications
- 3+ years of software QA experience, with at least 2 years focused on healthcare applications or EMR/EHR integrations
- Hands-on experience testing FHIR APIs and HL7 message flows
- Familiarity with EMR platforms (Epic, Cerner, or similar) and how data flows through integration engines like Mirth Connect
- Excellent cross-team communication with Engineering and Product; willing to follow Product influenced routines for UAT-style coverage beyond traditional engineering QA
- Experience collaborating across engineering teams as a shared quality resource or platform QA function
- Proficiency with API testing tools (Postman, REST-assured, or equivalent) and experience validating healthcare-specific API security standards
- Experience writing automated tests in TypeScript, JavaScript, Java, or Python within a modern CI/CD pipeline
- Working knowledge of HIPAA compliance requirements as they apply to test data handling and environment management
- Strong analytical skills with an ability to reason through complex, stateful integration scenarios spanning multiple systems
- Experience with Docker/Kubernetes environments and cloud-based (AWS) testing infrastructure is a plus
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- FHIR resource validation and conformance testing
- HL7, CDA message parsing and structure verification
- Healthcare terminology validation
- Ecosystem-level regression and compatibility test strategy
- Test automation frameworks in TypeScript/JavaScript or Java
- Synthetic and de-identified patient data generation for compliant test environments
- CI/CD pipeline integration (GitLab CI or equivalent)
- Healthcare data security, HIPAA compliance, and audit log verification
- Cross-functional collaboration and clear communication with non-EMR engineering teams
- Clear written communication for defect documentation, test plans, and compliance artifacts
